Teacher education is India is governed by a National Council for Teacher Education. This was a n advisory body till 1993 but after that it gained statutory status. It can perform regulatory functions, to improve the standards if teachers in India. The main objective of this council is to achieve a planned and coordinated development of teacher education throughout the country. This council is like an umbrella council for all the teacher education programs in the country. It includes all the guidelines of the training program required by an individual to become a primary/ secondary/ pre-primary/ University / vocational teacher in India. The council also regulates several part time and distance learning programs for students.
The National council of Teacher Education has its headquarters in Delhi and other four statutory committees in Bangalore, Bhopal, Bhubaneswar, and Jaipur etc. NCTE headquarters is headed by chairperson whereas the regional committee is headed by Regional directors.
The council has approved several of schools and institutes that provide teacher training course in the country. The list is huge and is directly under the jurisdiction of its regional statutory office. Teachers from these recognized institutions get a TTC or PTTC recognized by the center.
The NCTE shoulders various responsibilities, undertakes reviews and surveys of various aspects of teacher education in India and also regulates the curriculum provided by its recognize institute. Makes recommendations to central and state governed as well as Universities regarding plans and programs in the field of teacher education. This council also lays the guidelines of the minimum qualification required for a person to take the teacher training course. The council also reviews its guidelines and also reviews the performance of its recognized institutes. The council also regulates the tuition fee charged by the institute for this course and there by prevents commercialization of teacher education.
